Club Working Bee– We need volunteers to help for 2-3 hours on Tuesday mornings over the next two month period. We are also having a huge working bee around the club house and have had Tikipunga High school offer twenty kids for the day as well as a qualified builder to do small maintenance jobs. We will be hiring a large chipper to break up the trees being trimmed. (Free, thanks to’ 2 degrees’)A definit date has still to be decided.
So please see Daniel or Barbara and give them your name if you can help. We would like to complete the forest areas down the back nine. A big thank you to the volunteers who are already doing weekly work here on a Tuesday.

Pathways— Daniel has given an overview of work completed on the 8th pathway and the excellent work being carried out on the 15th pathway to the left of the lake. This is starting to look just great. We need volunteers to go down there and start clearing between the wooden walkway and the lake. Let’s get it back to the way it used to be.
Men’s Morrison Cup —- This has been postponed from Saturday 11th June due to the expected weather forecast and also because of the Buck Cup programmed for the following Saturday 18th June 2011. ( poster attached)
Fact or Fiction ????? —
There have only been eleven ‘holes in one’ recorded at this course since 2007 and Rodney Chang has recorded 2 x holes in one —- 15th hole in 2009 and 2nd Hole in 2007.
Only 2 Ladies are included in the eleven and they are both 9 hole Players
Alan Morgan made his first recorded hole in one in 1969 and then recorded his next in 2005. That is nearly 36 years of ‘near misses’ and Gerry Beazley recorded his first hole in one in 1988 and then his 2nd in 1993 and that took only 5 years of ‘near misses’

Facts about Golfers ??? — Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls, A recent study found that the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found that golfers drink, on average 22 gallons of alcohol a year. This means that on average golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon.
Kind of makes you proud, Almost makes you feel like a hybrid (thanks to John Sandford)

Golf Poem (Thanks to John Sandford)
In My Hand I Hold A Ball,
White And Dimpled, And Rather Small.
Oh, How Bland It Does Appear,
This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.
By Its Size I Could Not Guess
The Awesome Strength It Does Possess.
But Since I Fell beneath Its Spell,
I’ve Wandered through the Fires of Hell.
My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same
Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game.
It Rules My Mind For Hours On End;
A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.
It Has Made Me Curse And Made Me Cry,
And Hate Myself And Want To Die.
It Promises Me A Thing Called Par,
If I Hit It Straight And Far.
To Master Such A Tiny Ball
Should Not Be Very Hard At All.
But My Desires The Ball Refuses,
And Does Exactly As It Chooses.
It Hooks and Slices, Dribbles and Dies,
and Disappears Before My Eyes.
Often It Will Have A Whim,
To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim.
With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land,
It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.
Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,
If Only It Would Find The Hole.
It’s Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,
And Swear That I Will Give It Up.
And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow,
But the Ball Knows … I’ll Be Back Tomorrow.

Whangarei Golf Club Newsletter
June. 2011
June 2011 It has been a while since my last report on all things happening around the course, their has been a lot going on with the by-pass workings and the new 14th tee… I will try and cover all.
The new 14th tees have now taken shape and have been seeded… although it was disappointing to see them covered in straw even before the seed had germinated but it seems to be coming through slowly but surely… the fence will start going up in the next few weeks and this will enclose us down below quite nicely and should protect us from damage and stolen flags in the future,
A decision was made to fill in the grass bunkers besides the 11th green, this will enable us to run the rough mower over it and take away the time consuming weed eating which was done to maintain the area before that. Overall it is starting to look decent down their and has taken away around half an hours mowing time which is a big plus.
The working bee’s have started again and have made a big impact with two projects done being the 8th path area and the first pathway beside the green being re-done, what a great result and I am especially glad to see the 8th path area tidied up as it has been a problem for many years and will now be playable with the grass seed growing , it was seeded with rye and fescue mix which does well in the shade and won’t grow to high as it’s tight area for us to maintain, there is a project being undertaken as we speak with the pine tress down below being cleared of all tobacco weed and scrub in between, there is a small working bee that has formed, so if you are interested in helping see Barbara Lee or my self., we intend to chip all the piles back into the pines to suffocate the weeds coming through, we just don’t want the piles hanging around for as long as the last lot did , so please offer some of your time to get this project completed.
The putting green now has a fence around it to protect it from golfers using it as a walkway to the proshop, around 3 months ago the final straw came when a golfer had walked across the green and back with some substance on the bottom of their shoes which the green did not like, the barrier will also help keep stones ,etc of the green which causes damage to our greens mower, I ask members to respect the rope and not jump over it because you can’t be bothered to walk around it, it is their to protect your practise green.
The programme for the next few weeks includes vertidraining tees and greens, verticutting greens and sand top dressing them. The whole course has been sprayed for weeds last Tuesday, this hasn’t been done for 3 years and I can not wait to see the results, we will apply some fertiliser to the 1st fairway to help grass come through as the fairway is the worst for weed infestation.
As we come to the winter months keep carts away from greens and off tees and trek carefully as it gets more slippery around the place
Before I sign off I want to Thank and praise all the volunteers here at the club that help out, a lot has been achieved of late for minimal cost to the club so keep up the good work.
Happy Golfing— Daniel, Bruce, Marty and Dave
